The victims used an open fire inside the house in a bid to keep warm in Malvern’s Appolonia Street on Thursday, July 10.

“On arriving on the scene, we found two people who were in a critical condition. Three children, aged two, four and a teenager, died,” said Ms Santi Steinmann, the media liaisons officer for Netcare Limited.

According to Ms Steinmann, initial reports indicate that the occupants were using an open fire to keep warm, but it resulted in the occupants inhaling toxic fumes.

“The two critical patients were rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention. The exact details will remain the subject of a police investigation,” said Ms Steinmann. @JoburgJourno
