EMM calls for mass participation on Mandela Day

The EMM aims to allow community participation during the 67 minutes for Mandela Day on Friday, July 18.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) identified a number of beneficiaries across the region and has made donation bins available across its 20 customer care centres and 45 libraries.

The EMM aims to allow community participation during the 67 minutes for Mandela Day on Friday, July 18.

“This will be the first time the world will participate in the 67 minutes for Mandela Day without him. This gives us more reason to once again join hands with our communities to honour the life and legacy of former president Nelson Mandela through an act of goodwill,” said the EMM’s spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe.

“In a move to mobilise communities to join hands and make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate, we have made donation bins available at the customer care centres and libraries,” said Mr Gumede.

Donations can be made in the form of non-perishable foods, milk, sandwich spread, concentrated cold drinks, stationary, painting material, toiletries, new face cloths, towels and blankets.

“These items will be donated to the homes which we have identified. We appeal to the conscience of our people to head to their nearest customer care areas and libraries to become part of the collective that seeks to help the vulnerable people in our society. We believe everyone has something to offer,” said Mr Gadebe.

The United Nations officially declared July 18 as International Nelson Mandela Day in November 2009, recognising Mandela’s values and dedication to the service of humanity and acknowledging his contribution to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world. @BedfordEdenvale
