Gunfight in Illiondale

The team split up to cordon off the area. While on Dent Road, one of the reaction officers spotted two men running down the road

Two of the four men who held a mother, her two small children and their pregnant domestic worker at gunpoint were arrested.

The drama unfolded in Illiondale on Thursday morning.

At around 9.40am, the Mamba Strike Force control room received a call from a client informing them that her domestic worker had seen several men jump the wall of a house across the road.

Members of the Special Ops unit were dispatched to the area.

According to the operations director for Mamba Strike Force, Mr Kevin Norman, when the unit approached the scene they saw a silver Ford Ranger speeding down McNab Road.

“There was one occupant in the vehicle. The team split up to cordon off the area. While on Dent Road, one of the reaction officers spotted two men running down the road,” said Mr Norman.

He added that when an officer gave chase, one of the men fired several shots in his direction.

“Bullets penetrated the rear seat and window of the vehicle and lodged in the vehicle’s dashboard. The reaction officer then stopped his vehicle and proceeded to chase the suspects on foot,” said Mr Norman.

The officer was able to catch one of the men on Cecil Auret Road.

The other man then hijacked a tow-truck driver on Cecil Auret Road.

“The man ordered the driver of the truck to take him to the taxi rank,” said Mr Norman.

He added that on Betschana Road, the suspect exited the tow-truck and then proceeded to hijack a silver Opel Corsa before he fled the scene.

“Reaction officers gave chase while the suspect continued to fire shots at them,” said Mr Norman.

The man was cordoned off and arrested in Kempton Park, with the help of members of the SAPS.
