Community helps shack fire victims

Members of the community were thanked for their donations to residents of the Jumpers Informal Settlement, in Cleveland, following a recent fire.

A fire swept through the settlement on June 23.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said a man was set alight in his shack by a group of suspects. The man was burnt beyond recognition.

Over 100 shacks burnt to the ground and about 160 residents were affected, according to Ms Alison van der Molen, a former ward councillor.

She requested donations after being informed about the fire. Several members of the community, including the I Love Kensington Association and local businesses, donated goods.

“I thank everyone who donated goods, including the ANC Mzala branch and the Tzu Chi Foundation. I also commend the City of Johannesburg Disaster Management Department for their help,” said Ms Van der Molen.

She said the people of Jumpers Informal Settlement are close to her heart and even though she is not their councillor anymore, she will assist them where she can.

Const Mashakane urged people to donate more blankets and any other items that may be of use to the residents.
