Carl excels in orienteering events

Carl Holmes, a Jeppe High School for Boys grade 11 pupil, participated in the South African Orienteering Sprint Championships on June 14.

The event was held at the Woodlands Office Park. He competed in the Men’s U/20 age group and finished third, in a time of 30:11.

The following day he competed in the Gauteng Middle Distance Orienteering Champs held at the Big Red Barn in Irene. He finished fourth in the Men’s U/20 category, with a time of 40:18.

The event took place in a eucalyptus forest and covered 3.3 kilometres.

On June 16, Carl finished an unofficial second in the Gauteng Long Distance Orienteering Champs. He finished the 5.9 kilometre event in 1:28.

The event had to be used as a training exercise because five control points were stolen.

Carl is hoping to compete at the South African Orienteering Champs, which will be held in Howick, on October 4 and 5.

He represents the Rand Athletic Club Orienteers (RACO) and participates for the school in the Schools League.
