Democratic Alliance wins ward by-election

Mr Mike Spadino, a Malvern resident and DA member, won the ward 118 by-elections last week.

The by-elections followed the defection of former councillor, Ms Alison van der Molen, to the ANC earlier this year.

Soon after winning the ward, Clr Spadino said, “I feel great. I thank the residents who put their trust in me. I will endeavour to do everything I can to help people and to address their concerns.”

Clr Spadino was born in Jeppestown in 1959 and has lived in the ward for 48 years.

He has been active in community affairs for several years.

He chaired the Malvern Ratepayers and Residents Association and the Malvern United Community Forum. He also served on the Cleveland Community Police Forum and was named the Malvernian of the Year in 2004.

Prior to the elections, Clr Spadino said if he won the ward he would like to deal with issues such as the enforcement of by-laws with regards to illegal land usage, building contraventions and dumping. He also said he would like to ensure that city utilities provide the expected service delivery. After the election he said he stands by what he said.

The Cleveland Community Police Forum Sector 3 group congratulated Clr Spadino.

The chairperson, Ms Bernadette Wentzel said, “We congratulate Clr Spadino for winning the ward 118 election. We are looking forward to conquering some of the sector’s challenges together.”

Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) and the DA Johannesburg East Constituency Head, Clr Jack Bloom said, “I congratulate Clr Spadino, who I am sure will serve residents with care and devotion.”
