Writers discuss modern and past poetry

Poetry was the subject when the Writers 2000 meeting took place recently.

The meeting featured Ms Marcia Levenson as the guest speaker. Ms Levenson spoke about poetry and read excerpts from both modern and older poems.

The topic of her talk was based on the changing face of poetry and she answered the question, ‘why must poetry rhyme?’

To illustrate how poetry is usually written from a place of deep emotion, she read a poem from TS Eliot on the topic of death. She then read a modern poem written by Mr Billy Collins titled, ‘The Dead’.

Mr Jake van der Wilden, the chairman of Writers 2000 said, “Marcia’s advice to poets and aspiring poets is to pay attention to the imagery one uses and to be aware of tone, subject matter and rhythm. Aspiring poets must also ensure the poem has cadence.”

“She said one should not try and write like the masters, but to rather write when inspired and always keep a notebook close at hand to jot down ideas,” said Mr van der Wilden.

The next meeting of Writers 2000 will take place on Saturday, June 28. The speaker will be Mr John Molloy, a member of the group who has recently published a book called The Rush to Senlac Ridge.

The venue will be the Inyoni Creek Clubhouse at the Rand Aid Complex on the corner of Wordsworth and Modderfontein Roads, Lyndhurst.

Members and visitors are welcome to attend. There is a R10 door fee for visitors.
