Marist schools celebrate 125 years

Marist schools celebrate 125 years in Johannesburg this year.

The Marist Brothers arrived in Johannesburg in 1889 and opened the first boys school in Johannesburg in Koch Street.

Marist College, Observatory, now called Sacred Heart College, was founded in 1924 after the school outgrew its Koch Street premises.

The third school, St David’s Marist Inanda, was opened in 1942.

In 1966, the Koch Street School was transferred to Linmeyer and the name changed to Marist Brothers Linmeyer (Marion College).

The three schools met recently at Sacred Heart College to celebrate mass in commemoration of the 125 years of Marist education in Johannesburg.
