Banners go up for tolls to go down

Around 80 percent of motorists passing under the bridge showed their support for the initiative.

Banners spanning bridges across Gauteng have caused quite a stir as citizens kick the fight against e-tolling into high gear.

On Friday, the initiative drummed up massive support when one such banner was placed across the Linksfield Road bridge.

Motorists hooted, waved and flashed their lights in support of the campaign.

Similar banners were also placed across a number of other bridges such as Beyers Naude Drive.

Mr Rob Hutchinson, from the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (OUTA), was present at the Beyers Naude protest.

“It is uplifting to see the support we have received from the community,” he said.

He added that around 80 percent of motorists passing under the bridge showed their support for the initiative.

“Even those with tags joined in,” said Mr Hutchinson.

Ms Cynthia Ahrensmeier, who was part of the Edenvale protest, reported an equal amount of local support.

“Almost every car hooted when they saw the banners,” she said.

The banner protest will continue throughout Gauteng on a weekly basis.

In some areas, motorists will spot banners over bridges up to twice a week.
