Caxton Reynolds Race round two

The eight Caxton Reynolds Race 2014 teams braved the strong winds of June 14 to compete against each other for the top points and a trip to Zanzibar.

The second round of the competition was held at the Reynolds Travel Centre; on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Fourth Street in Springs.

Upon arrival, the teams had to complete eight tasks and each task needed to be completed in 1 minute and 30 seconds.

All the tasks for the day were set up to help educate the contestants about Zanzibar.

The tasks were as follows:

1. Using a syringe, one contestant had to suck up and transfer custard out of a glass into a tumbler using one hand; this represented the yellow fever vaccination one needs to get before going to Zanzibar.

2. The contestants sang a Queen original song for a karaoke competition; this represented Freddy Mercury because he was born in Zanzibar.

3. Participants had to taste and name four different spices originally from Zanzibar; this represented Zanzibar’s other name – the Spice Island.

4. A blank outline of the Tanzanian flag was given to participants and they had to colour in the flag with the correct colours.

5. Contestants were given Swahili words with English translations and they had to form a full sentence in Swahili, Zanzibar’s national language.

6. Contestants were shown four different currencies; they had to choose the correct currency for Zanzibar to advance to the next task.

7. Old stockings were tied together to create one long, circular string. The contestants took the string and put it around two people, who were used as pillars; first around the ankles, then the knees, proceeding to the waist, chest, neck and finally the arms (these were stages of the game). The other contestant had to jump into the string then over it at each stage of the game. Failure to do so resulted in being knocked out of the game – “Umgusha”.

8. One contestant held a pole with a bucket on each end on their shoulders while the other filled each bucket with stones making them balance equally. Once this was done, they raced from point A to point B without dropping the buckets or the stones. This represented Stone Town in Zanzibar.

The third round of the competition will be held at Hirsch’s Meadowdale on June 21.

The three teams with the most points by the end of the seventh week will all go into the finals, which will be held in Springs on August 2.
