Rea Vaya network extended

Plans to extend the Rea Vaya network in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) are gaining momentum.

During his budget speech recently, the member of the mayoral committee for finance in the CoJ, Clr Geoffrey Makhubo said, “We are re-stitching our city to create a different future for our residents, where we can link jobs to people and people to jobs along transport corridors. To attain this vision, the city is committed to concentrating capital funding and a range of interventions over the medium to long term in the Corridors of Freedom.”

One of the interventions is the investment of R2.6-billion in the Rea Vaya construction on the Louis Botha Corridor, a route which will benefit local residents.

Earlier this year, the city announced that the construction of Phase 1C of the CoJ Rea Vaya bus rapid transit system (BRT) had started. The plan is to link the central business district with Alexandra and Sandton.

Suburbs such as Yeoville, Hillbrow and Marlboro will receive attention during construction. This includes the upgrading of roads, the building of pedestrian bridges, pathways for cycling and walking, the beautification of road islands and kerbs. Phase 1C is expected to be complete by 2016.

In March this year, the EXPRESS published an article in which Mr Benny Makgoga, the director of marketing and communications for the CoJ’s Department of Transport, said Rea Vaya is a safe, fast, reliable and convenient way to travel. He was speaking following the launch of the Yeoville route. He said he wants all Rea Vaya users and motorists along the route to be safe and he urged motorists not to drive in the dedicated lane reserved for Rea Vaya buses.
