Children urged to be careful

Children have been urged to conceal their cellular phones when walking in public.

It would seem criminals continue to target children, especially when they are walking to and from school.

Mr Navin Bachu, from the Western Kensington Residents’ Association (WKRA), said several children have been robbed of their cellular phones and he believes the concealment of these devices will reduce the chances of becoming a target.

“I urge children to not walk with their cellular phones exposed. Children who walk alone are also easier targets for criminals. They should walk in groups and be wary of their surroundings. They should also not walk in secluded areas,” he said.

During a recent public meeting in Kensington, a resident suggested that school principals should also play their part by educating children regarding the dangers they face, which areas to stay away from and what to do in case of an emergency.

Mr Bachu supported the idea and said adults who are at home when children walk to and from school can also make a positive difference.

“Maybe parents can keep an eye on their street and report suspicious activities. This will create a safer environment for all children. If people become proactive, this will help reduce crime,” he said.

Some residents in the area covered by the WKRA have already started keeping a watchful eye on their streets, especially when children are around.
