Passenger robbed by alleged police officers

The taxi driver stopped his vehicle and one of the two men approached.

A taxi driver is being questioned in connection with a recent robbery.

The incident in question involved a man travelling who was travelling in a taxi from Bedfordview to Emperor’s Palace. He was robbed on the R21 on Saturday, May 17.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the man was on his way to Emperors Palace when the taxi driver received a phone call.

“A few minutes after the phone call, a vehicle with two men claiming to be police officers demanded that the taxi driver stop his vehicle. The passenger told the driver to not stop, as he suspected the men were not police officers,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

The taxi driver stopped his vehicle and one of the two men approached.

“The suspect showed the driver a police badge and demanded his licence. The other suspect approached the passenger side, opened the door and took the victim’s bag. The suspect searched the bag and took money and a cellular phone. The men then fled the scene in their vehicle,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

Investigations are continuing.
