Defence force vehicles in accident

A resident, who was driving home with her husband, witnessed the accident as it happened.

A Kensington resident has questioned the circumstances leading to an army vehicle being involved in an accident on Roberts Avenue on Sunday, April 30.

The army vehicle is based at 46 Brigade in Kensington. A resident, who was driving home with her husband, witnessed the accident as it happened.

“Two army vehicles were driving behind a red car, when the first army vehicle crashed into the red car, causing the second army vehicle to crash into the one in front it,” said the resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

She said some people were injured during the accident. “There was blood. Some of the soldiers were threatening us, telling us we were not allowed to take photographs. But I felt the public had the right to know what our soldiers get up to on a Sunday afternoon,” said the resident.

She said one of the army vehicles landed on the side of the road, near the pavement.

“Questions need to be asked about why an army vehicle was on the road and being driven in such a way that causes an accident,” said the resident.

The EXPRESS contacted Sergeant Pakade, the media relations officer at 46 Brigade in Kensington on Friday, May 9. Sergeant Pakade said the matter should be referred to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). The EXPRESS sent an enquiry to Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga, who is the defence corporate communications officer, on May 12.

Brig Gen Mabanga requested that the EXPRESS resend the enquiry to another e-mail address and confirmed receipt of the e-mail. The deadline for comment was Thursday, May 15 at 10am. Comment had not been received at the time of going to print. @JoburgJourno
