Art exhibition at children’s home

With the support of the community, the home is able to continue taking care of children in need.

The Johannesburg Children’s Home will celebrate Child Protection Week with an art exhibition on May 31.

Art classes are one of the therapies offered to the children to enable them to explore their feelings and creative talent.

Ms Fiona Duke, the home’s public relations officer, said this year’s Child Protection Week’s theme, Caring for our Community, is reflected at The Johannesburg Children’s Home.

“For over a century the home has provided care for children who have fallen victim to various categories of abuse such as sexual, emotional, physical and deliberate neglect. It is never the ideal for youngsters to grow up in a children’s home, but it is better than the alternative – the situations that led them to our care. Abandonment, neglect and abuse are the unenviable reasons for many young girls and boys being placed in our care,” she said.

With the support of the community, the home is able to continue taking care of children in need. “Regardless of their past, each of our little ones has the chance for a better today and a brighter future because of the help they are receiving now,” said Ms Duke.

The exhibition will take place from 10am to 2pm in the Westcott Hall at the home which is located at 59 Urania Street in Observatory.

Art works will be on sale and the proceeds will benefit the children’s art therapy sessions.

The children’s forum will be hosting a car wash on the day. All proceeds will go towards their fundraising initiative.
