Four arrested in Klopperpark with illegal cigarettes

A man who identified himself as the manager attempted to bribe an officer with R10 000.

A Klopperpark business manager attempted to bribe members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) when officers found R25 000 worth of illegal cigarettes in his shop.

Members of the EMPD’s Germiston crime prevention unit recently searched a shop run by a Bangladeshi businessman and found illicit cigarettes openly displayed in the shop.

Several cartons and master cases were confiscated and four men were arrested.

“A man who identified himself as the manager of the shop was one of those arrested. He attempted to bribe an officer with R10 000,” said the spokesperson for the EMPD, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

Another of the men arrested was found in possession of fraudulent asylum-seeker documents.

The men face charges of possession of illicit cigarettes while the manager will face an additional charge of bribery.

  1. As long as our police force is perceived as being incompetent and partially corrupt, our gates shall remain open, in invitation to criminal foreigners to ply their trade in our country in a larger scale, with possible international syndication! Well done on this bust but we still got a long way to go.
