Renowned journalist killed in Edenvale

Friends and former colleagues described Mr Wicks as “a legend of the industry”.

Renowned motorsport journalist and photographer, Mr Steve Wicks was killed in an accident on Van Riebeeck Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

Details of the accident have not been released, but it is believed Mr Wicks was knocked off his bicycle.

Friends and former colleagues described Mr Wicks as “a legend of the industry”.

Mr Wicks was always keen to assist others and many shared fond memories of him.

The South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) also paid tribute to Mr Wicks.

In a statement released yesterday afternoon, Mr Wicks was described as erstwhile Guild member and motorsport journalist extraordinaire.

As a motoring journalist, he first made his mark at Chequered Flag.

He then went on to put MotorPics on the motorsport map.

“Through all this he kept a steady stream of, mainly privateer, motorsport competitors supplied with media releases filled with his inimitable irreverence and uncomfortably knowledgeable view of his clients’ performance,” the statement read.
At a South African World Superbike Championship event, a German journalist once asked several members of SAGMJ whether they only photographed motorsport.

Mr Wicks’ immediate response was, “What else is there?”
“Those who knew Steve will miss him sorely and those who met him will not forget him. While he sometimes took his guidance from a very distant drummer, his sincerity and passion was uncontested. He had a remarkable ability to see things in a light the rest of us were blind to,” read another paragraph from the Guild’s statement.

Mr Wicks is survived by his partner, Ms Catherine O’Donnell, daughter Nicole and son Richard.
