Excellent response from Sebenza SAPS

I need to draw the public’s attention to something here - at no point did the police ever display any irritation at was (ultimately) a fruitless search.

I would like to use my column today to thank the Sebenza SAPS.

More specifically, the officers manning the Edleen Sector Police phone on Wednesday, April 30.

You see, I took a few days off (graciously granted by my boss) and received a wonderful welcome upon my return. A suspect (s) tried to break into my home. After my private security company scared the suspect away, it would seem these gentlemen of criminal intent waited in my neighbour’s yard. I can only assume they (or him) were waiting for the fuss to die down before trying again.

Luckily, my two dogs alerted me to this fact. At this point in time, I was outside, trying to see where my dogs were barking. When I noticed the razor wire which had been bent back, I returned inside my home. I think Usain Bolt had nothing on me at that moment.

So I called my sector police number. I explained the situation, slightly breathlessly I will admit, and waited for the police. Four minutes later (yes, I am being serious) a police vehicle was parked in my driveway, with two officers preparing to search my yard. Backup was called and in another eight minutes, I had a total of three police vehicles and six armed police officers searching for the suspect.

My neighbour’s yard was also searched – thoroughly I might add, but to no avail. It would seem the bad guys jumped more walls and disappeared.

I need to draw the public’s attention to something here – at no point did the police ever display any irritation at was (ultimately) a fruitless search. In fact, they insisted that calling the police was the right thing to do, and should I hear any more strange noises or see any people on my property, I must not hesitate to call again. All the officers who responded that night were not only friendly and supportive; they displayed an incredible degree of professionalism and willingness to ensure the safety of the public, in this case my wife and I.

Once the search was over, a vehicle was dispatched to remain in my area, should the suspects return.

I would especially like to thank Sergeant Berrish (spelling unsure, I was more focussed on other things). You and your partner came inside my home for a brief chat and something to drink (deservedly). You and your colleagues left my wife and I feeling safe, reassured and certain that should something happen, the police would be there to protect us. I thank not only the pair of you, but all the officers who responded to my call for help.

I know there are some bad apples in the SAPS, and perhaps we tend to focus on that. But there are many police officers out there who are not only trying their best, but who are offering excellent service to the community.

That night I was proud to be a taxpayer, because I could see where my money went.
