58 arrested during Easter blitz

58 people were arrested for various crimes during an Easter weekend blitz in and around Yeoville.

“The area was relatively quiet during the Easter holidays. Although there were a few incidents reported, most of the residents here are not from the area, so some went home to spend time with their families,” said Constable Thabo Malatji, of the Yeoville SAPS.

He said the crimes ranged from assault, reckless and negligent driving, robbery, possession of drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol and shoplifting.

“We increased visibility and targeted known hot-spots in the area. We engaged with liquor outlet owners, spreading awareness about the crimes involving drinking and the behaviour of patrons,” said Const Malatji.

He said some patrons consume alcohol and walk on the streets at night, making themselves vulnerable to criminals. He said the most common crime during this period was robbery.

“Most people are busy during this time and criminals take advantage. We urge members of the community to be vigilant and report anything suspicious they may come across,” said Const Malatji.

Most of the suspects arrested are expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon.
