Greenstone robbers caught in Sandton shootout

The occupants of a silver Chevrolet Lumina arrested following a shoot-out with Sandton SAPS yesterday are possibly linked to several cases of robbery in Edenvale.

According to the Provincial SAPS, a police officer spotted the vehicle which was suspected to have been involved in an armed robbery, on Rivonia Road.

When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, the occupants sped off and collided with several other vehicles before the driver lost control and crashed.

One of the vehicle occupants then opened fire at police officers while three others attempted to flee.

Police officers returned fire, killing one of the suspects. Two other vehicle occupants were wounded and a third was arrested without injury.

One police officer was also wounded in the shootout.

Police officers confiscated three firearms and one cellular phone from the men.

The most recent robbery by the men in Edenvale occurred on April 17 at the Stoneridge Shopping Centre.
