Speeding motorists face criminal charges

Another eight motorists were arrested for travelling at speeds between 171 km/h and 168 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

17 speeding motorists were recently arrested during several operations conducted by members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s (EMPD) High Speed Unit.

On April 6, between 6am and 9am on the N12 between Kraft Road in Germiston and Edenvale Road, the highest speed recorded was by a 56-year-old man in a Toyota Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), who recorded a speed of 179 km/h.

Another eight motorists were arrested for travelling at speeds between 171 km/h and 168 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

Charges of reckless and negligent driving were laid against motorists arrested and they were released on a bail of R500 each.

On Friday, April 11, between 6am and 7am, a 49-year-old driver was arrested in Cloverdene on Putfontein Road travelling at 113 lm/h in a 60 km/h zone in a Chevrolet sedan.

He also faces charges of reckless and negligent driving and will appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.

Another three motorists were arrested on the same stretch of road travelling at speeds between 96 km/h and 98 km/h.

On Monday last week, another operation was held on the R23 between Rangeview and Athlone Roads in Brakpan, where a further four motorists were caught exceeding the speed limit.

The speeds recorded were between 120 km/h and 126 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
