Brigade celebrates 15th birthday

46 SA Brigade's headquarters celebrated its 15th birthday.

The celebrations took place at the brigade’s headquarters in Kensington on April 4. The Brigade was established on April 1, 1999, and Kensington remains the home of the base. The celebrations included a presentation of medals to several members of the Brigade by General Officer Commanding Brigadier General Mantsane Akila Mapheto. The medals presented included the Unitas Medal, for 20-years of service. The day’s events included sports such as volleyball, tug-of-war and physical training. There was also a demonstration of medieval sword fighting as well as Krav Maga, an Israeli-developed self defence programme. Invited guests included former world boxing champion Mr Dingaan Thobela, to the delight of the children from the Twilight Home in Hillbrow, who were also in attendance. The children enjoyed a game of soccer with members from the Brigade. “The concept of inviting civilian members is to promote the vision of the Minister of Defence, that uniformed members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) must strive to interact with communities in their surroundings,” said Major Sam Masilela, the communications officer of 46 SA Brigade. The day ended with a tug-of-war competition between officers, warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and other ranks. The officers emerged victorious on the day. @JoburgJourno
