The Modderfontein Toastmasters hosted its first International Speech and Evaluation Contest on March 8.

The club boasted three speakers, Ms Karen Armour, Mr Bryant Rajuili and Mr Theo Truter. Seven members evaluated guest speaker, Mr Marcharl Jankowitz, the current Area I4 Governor.

The winner was Mr Rajuili, who told a story about an African folktale. Ms Armour was the runner-up.

Mr Rajuili has progressed to the area contest in April where he will compete against winning contestants from other clubs within the area.

Evaluations are designed to provide peer feedback on speeches and this is an important part of the Toastmasters programme, as it is here that speakers can develop their strengths and receive recommendations for improvement in their speaking and communication.

This also teaches a person to develop listening skills, which are vital in the business arena.

Ms Armour was crowned as the champion evaluator for the contest, with Mr Andrew McGill winning second place and Ms Rhoda Khanyi coming in third.

Toastmasters is an international programme which provides its members the skills to communicate effectively.

Modderfontein Toastmasters meets every second and fourth Saturday of the month at 8am for 8:30am at the Dros in Edenmeadows.
