Sacred Heart hosts mathematics, science festival

Sacred Heart College’s third biannual mathematics and science festival has begun.

The festival started on April 14 and continues until April 16.

Professor Graeme Bloch, from Wits and renowned Doctor Ridwan Mia, one of Sacred Heart College’s celebrated alumni, agreed to open the festival.

Zuki Mpiyakhe, from the Academy of Science, South Africa, will close the festival with a presentation.

Pupils will be exposed to an array of activities and lessons such as model building, a lecture about Paleo fossils, the complexity of mathematics, a chemistry show, telescope solar observation and a lecture on the detection and addiction to drugs.

The pupils will also have an opportunity to build their own telescopes with the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).

Doctor Danelle Badenhorst, the high school laboratory technician said, “The festival promises to be fun and educational. There will be a variety of exciting workshops, demonstrations and presentations, and the science projects of our pupils will also be judged and put on display.”

Ms Lamorna Cantin, the high school science teacher, said the festival is “a wonderful learning opportunity”.

“It provides an opportunity for pupils to participate in different experiences provided by experts. The topics presented are an extension of the curriculum. The festival is an enriching event which can spark a lifelong interest in the sciences,” she said.
