Officer robbed of his firearm

The suspects were armed with rifles and hand guns

A police officer was robbed of his service firearm while on duty in Observatory.

The incident happened on Eckstein Street.

“The members were on duty at a house on Eckstein Street. They were confronted by men who forced the gate open. The suspects were armed with rifles and hand guns,” said Constable Thabo Malatji, of the Yeoville SAPS.

He said a struggle then ensued with one of the officers when the suspects tried to disarm him. “They took the officer’s service firearm and tried to break into the main house. The other officers called for back-up and the suspects fled the scene. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported,” said Const Malatji.

A docket of armed robbery and burglary has been registered by the Yeoville SAPS. “Not arrests have been made yet,” said Const Malatji.
