Open manhole a danger to residents

The open manhole poses a danger to children who walk past it on their way to and from school.

A Kensington resident has expressed her concern regarding an open manhole that has not been covered for months.

The open manhole is in Kitchner Avenue. The resident, who did not wished to be named, said her concern was for the children who walk past the manhole on their way to and from school.

“The children walk on that road and I get worried, especially when it is raining because of the amount of water that flows into the hole,” said the resident. She said she has tried to report the matter to authorities, but with no success.

“All I regularly get is reference numbers, but nothing gets done. Maybe we should wait until something happens before something is done,” said the resident.

When the EXPRESS was there, the open manhole was filled with papers and rocks. “Where do our rates and taxes go if this can carry on for months? What is their aim then? It has been pouring down, it’s only a matter of time before somebody falls in,” said the resident. The EXPRESS sent an enquiry to the operations manager of communications and marketing for the Johannesburg Roads Agency, Mrs Bertha Peters- Scheepers. At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
