Join in on watching Edenvale’s rivers

Through the project it is hoped that authorities, volunteers and civil society can be connected and work towards the common goal of rehabilitating Edenvale’s rivers.

The newly launched Edenvale RiverWatch is dedicated to the improvement and restoration of streams in Edenvale.

Many open spaces in Edenvale and the surrounding areas are connected by streams, giving opportunity for nature to survive and for residents to experience leisure and refreshment.

Unfortunately, the deterioration is rapid and accelerating.

Edenvale RiverWatch aims to preserve and restore the little that is left.

Through the project it is hoped that authorities, volunteers and civil society can be connected and work towards the common goal of rehabilitating Edenvale’s rivers.

The objectives of Edenvale RiverWatch include the preservation of river habitats as continuous corridors for biodiversity and wildlife, improved quality of water and health of the streams and regular walks and leisure opportunities along the rivers to promote community understanding and involvement.

Edenvale RiverWatch is organised around the actions which can lead to improved streams and habitats, such as clean-up operations.

Other actions include preventing pollution, stopping the advance of invader plants and examining planned developments.

Edenvale RiverWatch will have two large clean-up operations this year, with the first taking place on Saturday, March 29.

The March clean-up will be centred on World Water Day.

The second clean-up for the year will take place in September and will form part of World Rivers Day.

Residents and organisations who want to take part in the March 29 clean-up can contact Dr Irwin Juckes on irwinjuckes@gmail.com or 083 604 2493.
