EMPD and JMPD join the ride

Pupils of Holy Rosary High School had the chance to meet four officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department's (EMPD) Motorcycle Unit who will be on duty during the Ride for a Purpose initiative.

The pupils met the officers on Thursday, March 13.

The initiative is an outreach and community event spearheaded by 15-year-old, grade 10 pupil Amy Driver, together with Holy Rosary High School. The event is aimed at raising awareness of domestic violence.

The EMPD, together with officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Dempartment (JMPD), will lead and supervise the ride all the way to Hartebeespoort Dam on Sunday, March 30. They will monitor the group of bikers who will depart from Holy Rosary School’s Shanahan Park in Adjuntant Road, Elma Park, at 9am.

“With less than two weeks left before the event, things are gathering momentum and dozens of biker clubs have signed up. The officers are looking forward to the event, which is unprecedented in terms of size, distance and the number of municipalities involved in the logistics, health and safety,” said Ms Shareen Driver, Amy’s mother.

“The most important part of this, is the purpose of the event – which is to raise awareness of domestic violence. We will raise funds for organisations that are helping victims of domestic and women abuse. This year the funds will go to the Jess Foord Foundation. The aim is to run the event annually, with the hope of helping many more charities and initiatives,” said Ms Driver.

All bikers, schools in the area, businesses and community members who are interested in being part of the Ride for a Purpose initiative are encouraged to join by contacting Ms Shareen Driver on 073 130 2176 or emailing shareen@reds-expo.co.za

“For those who aren’t bikers, there are opportunities to get a ride on a party bus. Be part of the ride and enjoy some lunch and fun at the final destination, Route 66, in Hartebeespoort,” said Ms Driver.
