Jacob graces Coppélia ballet again

Edenvale resident Jacob Mosehla stars in the full-length Joburg Ballet’s Coppélia, a classical ballet comedy which opened at the Joburg Theatre on March 7.

“I am extremely excited about performing this role again. It is one of my favourites and I am fortunate to be in this production with the Joburg Ballet once again,” said Mosehla.

When ask about the role he will be playing, Mosehla responded, “I perform the role of Dr Coppelius. Dr Coppelius is an elderly doll maker who keeps to himself in the little German village. He is inventive and secretive but has a good heart and much affection for the town’s people.”

“Dr Coppelius creates life-like dolls in his workshop and his favourite is the Coppélia doll. He loves her so much that he wishes to bring her to life. The mischievous villagers trick him into believing this has happened. I won’t reveal the rest of the story but you really have to come watch the ballet to find out how it all that unfolds,” said Mosehla.

Mosehla has undergone several rehearsing sessions in preparation for the show while balancing his job. “The rehearsal period has been hectic, especially when we were getting closer to opening night. I am a Cabin Attendant and had to juggle my flying commitments with the Joburg Ballet’s extremely busy rehearsal schedule. Luckily I still remember most of the ballet. Once the music starts playing, it is smooth sailing,” said Mosehla.

“The Coppélia is a magical story perfect for the whole family, providing escapism, wonderful music and a talented cast of local and international dancers. One thing I love and am always looking forward to is performing for the children,” said Mosehla.

Mosehla was a member of the corps de ballet and debuted in the role of Dr Coppelius in the SABT’s 2002 production of Coppélia. In 2004, Jacob moved to the SABT offices where he became the Administrative Assistant and continued to perform character roles for the SABT.

Mosehla has performed the role of Dr Coppelius in Coppélia, at the Val Whyte Bursary at the Wits Theatre and performed the role of the Elderly Suitor in the SABT’s Christmas season of ‘Cinderella’, as well as the role of Grandfather in The Nutcracker. He also recently appeared in Veronica Paeper’s Cinderella-the Ballet in 2009 and La Traviata in 2008.

In 2009, Mosehla starred in the filming of Coppélia for DVD with the same production being screened at Ster Kinekor Cinema Nouveau countrywide on October 8 in 2010.
