SPCA reports on severe neglect cases

Tina was severely emaciated and her owners requested she be euthanised.

In a space of only four days, the Bedfordview and Germiston SPCA dealt with four cases of severe animal abuse and neglect.

In the first case reported on February 10, the owners of a female cross-breed named Tina anonymously surrendered her to the SPCA.

Tina was severely emaciated and her owners requested she be euthanised.

“Tina was in a horrific condition. She was malnourished to the point where she was only skin and bones,” said the manager for the Bedfordview and Germiston SPCA, Mr Lawrence Kingston.

He added that she was humanely euthanised to end her long term suffering.

In the second case reported on February 12, two pets were surrendered to the SPCA.

The first of the two dogs, named Snoepie, had suffered for an extended time from a large, untreatable cancerous growth.

The second pet, a black and white Maltese poodle-cross, was handed over with a deep gash on her head.

Both pets were euthanised.

In another case reported on February 13, the SPCA received a call for a dog running around a school property.

When the dog was caught after a brief chase by SPCA inspectors, it was discovered that a large section of her skin was removed.

“We suspect boiling water was thrown over the dog. Unfortunately, due to the extreme trauma experienced, we had no other option but to humanely euthanize her,” said Mr Kingston.

These were only a few of the cases attended to by the SPCA recently.

“We would like to urge all responsible pet owners and animal lovers to visit their local veterinary hospital as soon as their pets show signs of being ill,” said Mr Kingston.

He added that residents can also call the SPCA for assistance or advice.

Mr Kingston also urged residents to report cases of animal cruelty immediately.

Residents can contact the SPCA on 011 825-5033 or e-mail spcagermist@polka.co.za for more information.
