More balaclava gang arrests

Four suspects who were in possession of firearms and balaclavas were arrested.

Five balaclava gang members were arrested and stolen goods recovered by the Cleveland SAPS on February 3.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said a Persimmon Street resident claimed that he was awoken by a noise at the door.

“Four suspects, wearing balaclavas and in possession of firearms, broke down the door and gained entry into the victim’s room. They ransacked the room and took electronic appliances. Police officers were informed about the incident and a case of house robbery was opened,” said Const Mashakane.

On the same day, police officers arrested a man believed to be a member of the gang. He gave them information about the whereabouts of the rest of the suspects.

Police officers went to an address in Main Reef Road, Jeppestown.

Police officers also recovered a number of stolen items.

The men were arrested and detained at the Cleveland SAPS.

“We urge community members who were victims of the balaclava gang to come to the police station and identify their goods. They should go to the SAP13 store to identify their property,” said Const Mashakane.

Community commended

The head of visible policing at the Cleveland SAPS, Colonel Nkosinathi Miya, thanked the community and the Cleveland Community Police Forum (CCPF) for their help.

Last week the EXPRESS reported that a group of residents marched to the Cleveland SAPS in December, demanding to know what police officers were doing to arrest members of the gang.

Members of the gang were targeting residents mainly living in backyard rooms, domestic accommodation and old flats.

A public meeting was held at which residents raised their concerns. Prior to the community demanding action, the Cleveland SAPS said it was working around the clock to arrest members of the gang. Although a few arrests were made, this did not deter the gang. Instead, police believed that more people were being recruited.

The Cleveland SAPS and the community police forum worked swiftly to calm furious residents. They worked closely with residents to gather information which could lead to arrests.

“The CCPF and the community worked together and this led to success. I thank you. I also thank all the police officers who were involved, which includes the crime intelligence officers and sector police officers. We established a team to stop this gang and they worked long hours. I commend everyone for all their help,” said Col Miya at the CCPF meeting held last week.

An identity parade will be arranged soon.
