Joint sector meeting held

Judging by the attendance at a joint sector meeting held recently, the I Love Kensington Association (Ilka) took a step in the right direction.

Late last year, Ilka approached the Cleveland and Jeppe SAPS management requesting a joint sector crime forum meeting. This suburb is policed by both police stations due to the precinct boundary line.

Mrs Lornette Joseph, the chairperson of Ilka, said the boundary line was a worry because police officers mentioned overlapping areas of concern at public meetings. It was also a concern because residents in certain areas were not sure which jurisdiction they fell under.

Mrs Joseph said Kensington had to be treated as one suburb to ensure effective and productive policing.

Although the Jeppe SAPS sector manager was unable to attend, residents received sufficient information from Warrant Officer Marx Crouse, the Cleveland SAPS sector manager for Kensington.

He provided tips, details about what to do in an emergency and who to contact, as well as what crimes have shown an increase over the past month. Mr Zola Dambula, the chairperson of the sector 1 crime forum in the Jeppe SAPS precinct, which includes parts of Kensington and other suburbs, also attended the meeting and gave residents advice.

Residents elected a committee for the new sector forum. The chairperson is Mr Bill Farquharson, Mr Clifford Hutton is the vice-chairperson and Mr Keith Daniels is the secretary.
