Non-functioning streetlights a danger

"This non-illumination is extremely hazardous, as it means that motorists are driving in total darkness on this stretch of road during the night, often for months at a time," he said.

A lack of street lights in Meadowdale could possibly have fatal consequences.

“With monotonous regularity, the street lights fail to function at the Van Riebeeck Avenue and Lascelles Road intersection,” said resident, Mr Ivan Leon.

He added that when the lights fail, the entire intersection is plunged into darkness at night.

“During early 2013, there was a period when they were non-functional for about four months. When they were repaired, they only worked for a few weeks before everything went dark again,” said Mr Leon.

“This non-illumination is extremely hazardous, as it means that motorists are driving in total darkness on this stretch of road during the night, often for months at a time,” he said.

Ward 92 councillor for the area, Clr Graham Gersbach, has fought with council for a number of months to get the street lights repaired in the area.

Other areas of repeated concern for Clr Gersbach are Meadowdale, alongside the R24, Shelton Road in Harmelia and Kruin Street in Klopperpark.

The communications and marketing department of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) said a team would be dispatched to investigate and repair the lights in question.
