The veterinarian’s report on the dog beaten with a metal pole has revealed chilling details.

The female, medium cross-breed dog which suffered extreme trauma and serious injuries after being beaten, had a history of assault with a metal pole.

Last week, the NEWS published an article stating that someone called the Germiston and Bedfordview SPCA on January 21 to report that a dog had been beaten.

An inspector found the dog, but the owner said he did not see the incident take place.

Mr Laurence Kingston, the manager of the Germiston and Bedfordview SPCA, said children in the area witnessed what had happened.

The dog was taken to the North Rand Animal Hospital for treatment.

The veterinarian’s report revealed that the dog was unconscious and non-responsive to painful stimuli, indicating severe brain injury.

Her right eye was hanging out of the socket. There was blood in her throat and she had difficulty breathing. There was a large haematoma in the area of her left lower jaw, as well as a laceration on her tongue. She had blood coming out of her nose, a fractured lower jaw and an open wound on her left shoulder. Her urine was brown in colour, an indication of severe muscle trauma.

The dog had to be euthanized due to the seriousness of the injuries it sustained.

Mr Kingston previously told the NEWS that a case of animal cruelty would be opened once all the relevant details and statements have been obtained.

Last week he said a case, arrest and charges are pending on witnesses and their reports.

“We as the SPCA will charge any perpetrators of these deeds under the Animals Protection Act No 71 of 1962,” he said

To report incidents, contact the SPCA on 011 825-5033. For emergencies, call 082 675 0072. Alternatively e-mail spcagermist@polka.co.za

Residents react:

Several residents took to the Bedfordview and Edenvale NEWS’ website to voice their anger after reading about the incident. Below are some of the comments from readers:

Charmaine: How cruel can someone be? I can’t imagine what this poor fur baby went through. Chuck him in prison and hope he shares a cell with an animal lover. Wake up South Africa, and please bring in stricter penalties for animal cruelty.

Rene: Please please please let’s get a public register in place for rapists and animal abusers, where their photographs, names, addresses and crimes committed become public knowledge, otherwise this scourge will never end!!!! I cannot read or hear of any more cruelty to innocent children and animals, I get ill. What is wrong with the world today?

Haloumi: Disgusting excuse for a human, should be beaten to the same degree.

Heather: What sick, depraved people would do such a thing to an innocent helpless being? I hope they rot in hell.

Wendy: Do me a favour and give this owner a lethal injection that he dies a slow death. I’m so angry reading this.

Petro: The feeling I have inside me I can’t explain. Just tell me why would someone do this? Please take all animals away from all these people because you say you have animal cruelty on a daily basis!
