The Lambano Sanctuary started the new year with a blessing from the Bedfordview Athletics Club, in partnership with Dis-Chem, when they hosted the annual half marathon.
The event was held at the Bedfordview Virgin Active on January 12 and the community came out in good numbers to support the cause.
The event has grown into a fun family affair for the community of Bedfordview, while benefiting two nominated charities operating in the surrounding areas.
“Our organisation, Lambano Sanctuary located in Malvern East, was very fortunate to have been nominated as a beneficiary of this event because it provided us with the opportunity to inform more people about our programmes,” said Lambano’s executive director, Lyn Croote.
A whopping R49 440 was raised for Lombano Sanctuary. Half of this amount was contributed by Dischem, which matched the Bedfordview Athletics donations Rand-for-Rand.
As it is the beginning of the year, the money donated will assist Lambano greatly with educational expenses for 28 school children.
Founded in 2001, this organisation offers holistic care and supports a residential facility for up to 30 HIV positive children. The children are housed across four homes, with each house having a permanent, residing housemother. Another programme offered by Lambano Sanctuary is the recently upgraded 18-bed paediatric Hospice / Medical Step Down Facility, which takes in children from birth until the age of 17.
