Yoga instructor, Mr Keneth Ernest Brophy, celebrated his 90th birthday at the Edenvale Community Centre on January 15. The centre held a surprise party for the yoga instructor, who was born on January 17, 1924. “I had no idea about the party, I really did not expect it. I am touched by everybody who organised my 90th birthday party because it exceeded all my expectations. I really feel appreciated,” said Mr Brophy. When asked how he managed to lead such a long and healthy life, he said, “I have always been fit for as long as I can remember and have always tried to maintain it. Staying fit and being healthy has helped me achieve my age.” Organiser Ms Ann Gavin said, “With help and contributions from the people involved in the yoga club, we managed to organise the event. Ken has been devoted to us, has always led us with yoga and is here every week. This was our way of showing him how much we appreciate him.” Mr Brophy’s daughter, Vanessa Engelbrecht said, “We are thrilled that the yoga club organised something. He has done a lot for the senior citizens in Edenvale for as long as I can remember, so it is nice that they appreciate him, especially on his 90th birthday. Not a lot of people get to 90 these days. He is still as fit as a fiddle.” Mr Brophy’s birthday party also featured entertainment from professional belly dancer, Ms Bhana Van der Walt, who described the event as amazing. She added that she was honoured to be chosen to dance at the birthday. Ken has been teaching yoga since the mid 90s and before that was a CNA for 45 years. In 1939 he was an anti-tank gunner for the South African Army serving in Italy and Egypt during World War Two.
