A couple aged 25 and 28 has been arrested for the murder of a one-year-old baby.
The two, both from Yeoville, were taken into custody on January 1. The child was the woman’s daughter.
“It is alleged that the child was with the couple on December 31 last year and they went to sleep with the baby. They woke up on January 1 and discovered that the baby was dead,” said Constable Thabo Malatji of the Yeoville SAPS.
According to an eye witness, the mother of the child was seen carrying the child wrapped in a blanket, walking to her own home after leaving her boyfriend’s house, where she had spent the night.
“When the mother arrived at her home, her friend asked her what had happened to the baby and she said she had no idea,” said Const Malatji. Police and paramedics were called to the scene.
“The child had bruises on the face and on the head. The woman’s boyfriend was questioned and he said he had no knowledge about what had happened to the child,” said Const Malatji. They were both taken into custody and appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on January 3.
“They were both remanded in custody,” said Const Malatji.
