Robbers flee after resident strikes back

The husband said the safe was in the office and the suspects then raided the office and stole ammunition. They searched the drawers and stole jewellery and money.

A house robbery took place on Tuesday, November 26, on Fouche Road in Morninghill, Bedfordview.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, “A man was with his wife in the kitchen of their house. They were about to leave to collect their children from church. The couple opened their door to discover three unknown men at their door with a screwdriver and a brick. The men demanded that the couple to go back into the house. The men ordered the couple to lie down on the floor, where the men tied the victims up with their shoe laces. The men demanded jewellery and the keys to the safe.”

“The husband said the safe was in the office and the suspects then raided the office and stole ammunition. They searched the drawers and stole jewellery and money. The men then demanded the victim’s gun, credit card and pin number. The thieves then proceeded to disconnect the television. It was in this period that the husband managed to untie his hands and took the suspect’s screwdriver, pointing it at him,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

“The suspects then ran out the house. The husband locked the front door, ran upstairs to his office and retrieved his rifle. He looked out the office window and noticed that the three suspects were unable to exit the premises because the gate had closed. The suspects were attempting to use the homeowner’s vehicle to flee. The husband fired three shots through the window. The suspects exited the car and jumped the fence, leaving behind all the stolen possessions,” said Sgt Nhlabati.

The Bedfordview SAPS were contacted. All stolen goods were recovered, except for five cellular phones.

The police are still investigating.
