Tavern causes concern for resident

In a community meeting held on November 16, the matter was discussed by members of the community. “We seem to be going around in circles because we expressed our outrage, but what solutions do we have? We will not take matters into our own hands,” said the resident.

A Malvern resident has expressed her concern regarding a tavern in Malvern, on the corner of Frere and Persimmon streets.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said she has reached a stage where she had to vent for the last time.

“I am not sure what to do anymore, maybe taking the matter to the media would help highlight the problem,” said the resident.

She said her concern was that the tavern was in close proximity to a primary school.

“We have taken this matter to the Cleveland SAPS, but our concerns seem to fall on deaf ears,” said the resident.

She said if the community was to take action themselves, they would be accused of xenophobia as the place is frequented by foreign nationals.

In a community meeting held on November 16, the matter was discussed by members of the community. “We seem to be going around in circles because we expressed our outrage, but what solutions do we have? We will not take matters into our own hands,” said the resident.

She said her wish would be to see members of the Tactical Response Team, also known as the “amaberete”, attending to their concerns.

“The Cleveland SAPS are letting us down. Calling 10111 seems to be a better option. The last time I called them they came out and restored order,” said the resident.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, of the Cleveland SAPS, said they had received calls about the tavern in the past.

“Our members have been called out to the area and complaints were dealt with. Members of the community must have faith in the SAPS and call the police when they see something wrong. The tavern is not, however, on the same block as the school,” said Const Mashakane.
