Centre does away with veggie garden

The Edenvale Care Centre Hospice plans to do away with its vegetable garden.

This is to make way for a new recovery garden for patients.

Sister Leigh from the centre said the garden recently fell into ruin when the gardener employed at the centre neglected his duties.

“We have since let the man go but we have bigger plans for the garden,” said Sister Leigh.

“With our growing disease profile, it has become important that we offer our patients a relaxing place to recover,” she said.

Plans for the garden include digging up the current dilapidated vegetable garden, planting new roses and other plants and eventually adding a lapa for patients.

“It would look amazing and be useful to our recovering patients, especially those who have regular visits with their children,” said Sister Leigh.

Currently the Edenvale Care Centre Hospice has a waiting list for admissions from eight hospitals.

Its disease profile includes stroke victims, head injuries, cancer, TB, HIV/Aids and many more.

“We continually struggle with funding but always do our best for our patients,” said Sister Leigh.

Adding to the pressure, the centre also caters for students from three nursing colleges.

“When my students leave, they can work at any facility because they have to work with such a variety of patients,” said Sister Leigh.

Residents and businesses who would like to be a part of the new project at the centre by either donating funds or goods to the new garden, can contact the centre on 011 454-0996.
