Meals on Wheels feed 10 000

The cook-off was aimed at preparing 10 000 meals for less fortunate South Africans in Pretoria, the Vaal Triangle, the Johannesburg CBD as well as the East, West and South Rand.

The first annual cook-off was launched by Meals on Wheels and their Msupporters at Gillooly’s Farm on Thursday, November 21.

The cook-off was aimed at preparing 10 000 meals for less fortunate South Africans in Pretoria, the Vaal Triangle, the Johannesburg CBD as well as the East, West and South Rand.

Volunteers were placed into teams of eight people and were required to chop, peel, spice, cook and deliver meals. Contestants were judged on their hygiene, cleanliness and the appearance and taste of the food.

“We are pleased to be able to bring a smile to those less fortunate by participating in such a heart-warming project. Meals on Wheels do such amazing work to uplift local communities. It is a privilege to be involved.” said Ready Meals’ general manager, Dominique Nelissen.

“I did not expect it to be so big. I expected five companies to pitch in, but 15 companies are present. Each company is cooking for 1 000 people. 10 000 people fed is our goal and hopefully we can do more than that. The event has been absolutely awesome. We have had a little trouble with the wind and the weather, but overall it has been a fantastic event,” said organiser Michelle Wohlberg.

Meals on Wheels was established in 1961 and is a multi-faceted welfare service that depends on volunteers to prepare and deliver over 10 million meals per year to disadvantaged senior citizens in the comfort of their own homes.
