Couple celebrates 69th anniversary

The Second World War was still raging when Roger and Maureen exchanged vows in the St Augustine Anglican Church in Orange Grove in 1944.

The Redmans of Thornhill Manor retirement village in Modderfontein will celebrate 69 years of marriage on December 9.

The Second World War was still raging when Roger and Maureen exchanged vows in the St Augustine Anglican Church in Orange Grove in 1944.

Roger remembers how they were in trouble with friends and family for setting the date so close to Christmas.

The couple lived in Zambia for 12 years before they returned to South Africa and settled at the Kelvin Power Station.

Roger worked there as a mechanical engineer. After 17 years, they moved to Highway Gardens where they stayed for two decades.

Thornhill Manor has been their home for the past 11 years and they said they are happy with the retirement choice they made.

A typist before she wed, Maureen worked as church secretary in Zambia before she became a full-time homemaker and mother to their son, Anthony and daughter, Lyndsay. The couple, both in their 90s, have three grandchildren.

Roger said faith is the foundation of their long and happy marriage. “And determination,” added Maureen.
