Rowers victorious at provincial champs

St Andrew’s School for Girls rowed to victory as they claimed the overall winner’s trophy at the Gauteng Rowing Championships at Roodeplaat Dam recently.

St Andrew’s School for Girls last won the trophy in the 2004/5 season.

Head coach at St Andrew’s, Kirsty McCann, believes the school’s U/14 team has great potential after they achieved their best results in six years. The team consisted of four quads in the age group final. Team members Tahne Badenhorst, Cara Nel, Caitlin Liepsig, Megan Liepsig and coxawin, Simone Luis acheived gold. Three doubles teams participated in the A final and won gold (Liepsig and Nel) and bronze (Alex da Sousa and Rachel Haddow). Two scullers in the A final crossed the line in second (Badenhorst) and third (Megan Liepsig).

U/15 girls double team members, Skye Kampmann and Sigourney Griffin-Ellis, achieved a gold medal. Three more St Andrew’s quads in the A final event finished third, fourth and eighth.

St Andrew’s won the Open Pair A final with the team of Kirsten Dempsey and Elke Solot. St Andrew’s best position in the sculls event was Amy Mattushek with a silver medal, Jennifer Cleary with a fourth place finish and Rosanne Bentley in fifth place.

The prestigious race of the regatta, the Open Quad event, saw St Andrew’s rowers Amy Mattushek, Nicole Simoes, Jennifer Cleary, Rosanne Bentley and coxwain, Thato Matlou beaten in a nail-biting finish by a determined St Mary’s team.

St Andrew’s coach, McCann, won gold in the senior women’s sculls event. The overall results are St Andrew’s in first place with a score of 322. In second place is St Mary’s (305), third is Holy Rosary (213).
