Bedfordview Edenvale News receives award

In October, more than 80 000 books were donated by the centre.

The Bedfordview Edenvale NEWS was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the board and volunteers of the Human Distribution Centre of South Africa, at the Rotary Centre in Van Vuuren Street, Bedfordview, on November 11.

The event, hosted by Shirley Downie and District Giver Anneas Balt, was aimed at recognising and acknowledging sponsors, donors, contributors and the 23 volunteers for their continuous support to the educational project.

“The Rotary’s Humanity in Motion philosophy proves that with the help of many volunteers and the sponsorship of supporting companies, we are able to offer books to different organisations. I was delighted that 33 people attended the event where certificates of appreciation were handed to companies and volunteers,” said Ms Downie.

In October, more than 80 000 books were donated by the centre. The majority of the books went to schools, mainly selected by teachers and nursery schools.

Twelve percent of the books were sent to the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces, nine percent went to a library built by a company for a school and two percent went to old age homes.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Foundation also received books and four percent went to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Since 2008, the Humanitarian Distribution Centre of Southern Africa has donated close to five million books to schools, churches, libraries, prisons, universities, crèches and nursery schools, and old age homes.
