Shot suspected burglar dies in hospital

“Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning,” said Lt Col Roberts.

A suspected burglar who was shot on Modderfontein Road died from his injuries in hospital.

Acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, said he and fellow officer, Captain Vincent Pangisa, were patrolling in Illiondale on Sunday last week when they noticed a man jump over a house wall.

“He then climbed into a waiting vehicle with two occupants. We stopped close to the vehicle and ordered the men to get out. When they attempted to flee Illiondale, shots were fired at the vehicle but it did not stop the men. They almost drove over us trying to get away,” said Lt Col Roberts.

He added that a chase ensued through the streets of Illiondale before the occupants of the vehicles headed for the P91 along Modderfontein Road.

“The men drove into oncoming traffic, but with the help of a tracking company, the vehicle was cordoned off.

“Even this did not stop the men and they again tried to get away. Another shot was fired which hit one occupant in the vehicle,” said Lt Col Roberts.

The gunshot victim was transported to hospital in a serious condition.

“Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning,” said Lt Col Roberts.

He added that the remaining two suspects will appear in court soon and face charges of, among others, attempted murder.
