Thieves in a jam

The suspects then proceeded to steal items out of a vehicle. Police and security officers gave chase and the suspects jumped into a VW Polo and sped off.

Eagle-eyed police officers arrested two suspects after they were caught stealing items from a vehicle parked at the Greenstone Crescent Shopping Centre on November 15.

The officers were patrolling when they noticed two men using a vehicle jamming device.

The suspects then proceeded to steal items out of a vehicle. Police and security officers gave chase and the suspects jumped into a VW Polo and sped off.

Police officers chased the suspects down Andries Pretorius Road and into a taxi rank in Edenvale, where the chase proceeded on foot. The officers apprehended both suspects and detained them at the Edenvale SAPS station.

The suspects’ getaway vehicle was reported stolen in Randburg in October.

Spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, said he hopes the suspects can be linked to other cases of the same modus operandi in the Greenstone area. Both suspects are South African citizens and were released on bail for similar charges in October. They appeared in the Germiston Regional Court on November 18 on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, theft out of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property.

A jamming device, used to override a vehicle’s remote central locking, was also recovered and was presented as evidence.

The suspects also admitted to stealing items from another vehicle in Bedfordview.

“We thank the security officers for the quick response,” said Lt Col Roberts.
