Pool refurbishment begins

The long awaited refurbishment of the Rhodes Park Swimming Pool has begun.

Contractors are currently digging up the paving around the main pool and scraping away old paint on the buildings surrounding the pool.

The buildings, toilets, offices, children’s pool and other parts of the premises will all be repaired.

The pool was closed several years ago due to structural damage to the shell. According to council, the damage was a result of soil movement.

The premises suffered severe damage over the past few years. Clr Carlos da Rocha, of ward 66, said a few months ago he requested officials help him address problems in certain facilities, which included Rhodes Park.

An on-site meeting was held with officials and soon after money was allocated by council to repair the pool.

Earlier this year, Mr Nthatisi Modingoane, from the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), said the repairs were estimated at R7-million.

It is anticipated that the pool will open to the public next year.
