SAPS plan to tackle prostitution

Plans are underway to deal with prostitutes conducting their business in full view of residents and children on the streets of Observatory.

“Plans are underway to curb the presence of the prostitutes on the streets. Police officers on patrol will chase them away if the prostitutes are found roaming the streets,” said Constable Thabo Malatji of the Yeoville SAPS.

He added that although prostitution is very difficult to prove in court, he urged the community to work hand-in-hand with them in identifying the hotspots and alerting the police.

“Unless we catch people in the act, it becomes very difficult to prosecute despite the complaints we receive from the community,” said Const Malatji.

The Steyn Street committee, which was formed in order to discuss and share information about the issues affecting the community, started a Whatsapp group to alert and inform each other.

“We had a meeting with the sector manager and we have an understanding. It’s still early days, but we want to give the plan a chance and see how it takes shape,” said Mr Ashraf Nakhooda, who is part of the Steyn Street committee.
