SAPS festive season plans underway

The national office has indicated a variety of crime-preventing strategies, which are currently underway.

The Bedfordview SAPS’ plans to combat crime this festive season are underway.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the five-phase plan spans October 15 to the end of January in an attempt to combat the high levels of crime that accompany the festive season.

“The national office has indicated a variety of crime-preventing strategies, which are currently underway. The first phase started on October 15 and will end on November 20. There will be a number of operations, including roadblocks on certain roads, searches for unroadworthy vehicles, hijacked vehicles and wanted suspects. We also looking to contain violence against women this festive season,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

“We will seeking out all components that contribute to crime in our area, like illegal firearms, ammunition, drugs and the excessive consumption. We also be in attendance at large gatherings and events to prevent criminal activities. We are certain that, this coming festive season, we will be ready for any perpetrators of crime,” he added.

The Bedfordview SAPS will also monitor businesses, shopping complexes and malls to try preventing robberies. Businesses are often targeted during the festive season, with burglaries and ATM bombings. The Bedfordview SAPS will work in coordination with the Germiston, Primrose, Alberton, Brackendowns and Elsburg SAPS stations to increase manpower, vehicles and facilities.

Sgt Nhlabathi pleaded with community members to work with the SAPS.

“Crime can never be combated by a single security agency, like the police. Crime prevention is the business of every citizen in this country, not just police officers,” he said.
