Two suspects shot and wounded

Two suspects and three bystanders sustained gun shot wounds.

Two suspects were shot and wounded when Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers foiled a car theft attempt.

The incident occurred on Raleigh Street on November 2.

“JMPD members were on patrol along Raleigh Street when they noticed four men in a vehicle trying to tamper with the ignition of a car. They approached the vehicle and one of the suspects, who was sitting on the driver’s side of the vehicle, took out a firearm and shot at the Metro Police officer,” said Constable Thabo Malatji of the Yeoville SAPS.

The officers returned fire and a gun fight ensued. Two of the suspects and three bystanders sustained gun shot wounds.

“One of the suspects was shot in the upper body and managed to escape the scene along with two other suspects. The fourth suspect, who was shooting at the police, was apprehended on the scene and taken to hospital under police guard. The suspect’s firearm was recovered,” said Const Malatji.

When the officers arrived at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, they found one of the suspects who had escaped at the scene. The three bystanders who were injured in the shootout were also taken to hospital.

No Metro Police officers were injured in the shooting. “A manhunt for the remaining suspects continues. A docket for attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition has been registered at the Yeoville SAPS,” said Const Malatji.
